Introduction

Posters are an effective way to connect with passengers and promote travel around London. Different design techniques have been used over time to get people’s attention.

The Underground Group and London Transport were major sponsors of poster art during the 20th century.

They commissioned a huge variety of artists and designers ranging from the well-established to the unknown. In doing so, they promoted a wide range of artistic and graphic styles and techniques. Some artists embraced traditional methods while others adopted modern and experimental mediums.

Today, the tradition of commissioning high quality art continues with Transport for London.
