Description | This poster was commissioned by the Underground in 1924. The bold design by Austin Cooper promotes the warmth and comfort of the Tube in winter. A complementary poster was issued in the summer, declaring 'It's cooler down below'. Cooper was born on the prairie in Manitoba, Canada. He was sent to Europe as a child and studied at the Cardiff School of Art from the age of 13, before winning a scholarship to the Allan-Frazer Art College, Arbroath (1906/10). He returned to Canada to begin a career as a commercial artist in Montreal, but in 1922 he settled in London where he received his first poster commission from the Underground. Cooper designed 54 posters for London Transport between 1922 and 1944. |
