Introduction

Meet the presenters of Secrets of the Underground - Siddy Holloway and Tim Dunn!

Tim is a ever-enthusiastic broadcaster, geographer and historian and a longtime supporter of the Museum, while Siddy has worked with the Museum since 2015, helping to develop the Hidden London programme of tours, which has allowed almost 100,000 people to see behind the scenes at stations all over London.

Tim and Siddy will be posting their personal experiences of filming and more fascinating stories and facts from behind the scenes of the show. Follow them on social media and join the conversation using #SecretsOfTheLondonUnderground.

Tim Dunn

Tim Dunn is a broadcaster, historian, geographer and marketer. As a broadcaster he is best known for presenting three TV series of the critically-acclaimed The Architecture the Railways Built for UKTV’s Yesterday channel, and co-presenting BBC’s infamous Trainspotting Live.

He frequently works with many UK museums (including the London Transport Museum), train operating companies and heritage railways to present their own live social media broadcasts. He is also Travel Editor for Europe’s leading independent rail app and website, Trainline.

As a historian he has curated exhibitions on miniature railways and model architecture, written two books. contributes features to magazines and national newspapers, and is a regular commentator on TV and radio regarding historic transport matters. A key theme through all his work is opening doors to perceived niche topics with unbounded enthusiasm - bringing people along on unexpected journeys. Working again with the ace Siddy Holloway, LTM and TfL teams on Secrets of the London Underground is yet another example of finding delight and intrigue in the unseen everyday.

Even in his spare time, Tim is rarely far from transport infrastructure and museums. He has served as a trustee or board director for the British Postal Museum & Archives, the Sierra Leone National Railway Museum and the Miniature Railway Museum Trust. And as you read this, he is probably heading off somewhere new… of course, on a train.

We asked Tim...

What was your highlight of Series 1?

My highlight has to be the Track Walk from Whitechapel to St Mary’s and Aldgate: it’s a privilege to do this stuff so that we can share it with a huge audience who wouldn’t otherwise experience it.

What’s your favourite station?

My favourite station is Baker Street - always! It has so many layers of history representing every era of the Underground’s past. Maybe we’ll go there another day…

What’s your favourite object from our Collection?

My favourite object from the collection that we see in the series is probably the A-stock car in the Depot: I went to school on it! But there are others, as yet unseen…

Siddy Holloway was born in Iceland and moved to the UK in 2010 to train as an actress at University. A lover of London history and forgotten stories, she joined the London Transport Museum in 2015.

In her time at the London Transport Museum, she co-developed all the Hidden London tours, co-authored the book Hidden London: Discovering the Forgotten Underground, published in 2019 and was a key team member behind the award-winning Hidden London exhibition. She also manages the Hidden London guide team and is always hunting for new exciting sites to turn into public tours.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Siddy started the popular YouTube series Hidden London Hangouts with her co-hosts Chris, Laura and Alex, as well as created the very popular Hidden London virtual tours. Filming a documentary series like the Secrets of the London Underground has been a dream of hers for many years and she says she is “so excited to bring the audience to extraordinary spaces and take them on this fascinating journey of discovery” with the brilliant Tim Dunn.

In her spare time, Siddy is an avid long-distance runner, loves to travel and cook, desperately wants to get a dog and does voiceover work for film and television.

We asked Siddy...

What was your highlight of Series 1?

This is a tough one, as there were so many amazing locations and moments. My favourite moment was probably taking Tim to North End and doing a track walk in the middle of the night to see stations from the track level, which you can see in episode 2.

What’s your favourite station?

My favourite station is Holloway Road! Mostly because it’s my namesake, but it’s also somewhere I hadn’t been to before and therefore got to discover all its hidden secrets for the first time on camera.

What’s your favourite object from our Collection?

My favourite item is a very tough one as there are so many! If pressed for an answer though, I’d say the spiral escalator from Holloway Road we have at our Depot.
