Family Depot tours

Exclusively for family groups, join us at our London Transport Museum Depot in Acton, west London to uncover the stories of some of the very special vehicles in our collection. From the tons of poo that accompanied the first Horse Buses, to why trains have bogies, this highlights tour of our bus and train shed may surprise you! One of our knowledgeable and engaging learning facilitators will take you around part of the Depot to discover some of our favourite vehicles and the stories of the people behind them.  

Family tours are aimed at family groups with children aged 5-9 years old. All visitors under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Topics that may be covered in a Depot Family Tour

(Please note that this is a working depot. Vehicles can be moved at short notice, so it’s not guaranteed that all these topics will be covered). 

  • Historic buses 

  • Trams and trolley buses 

  • London Underground stock 

Tour times until end March 2024: 10:00, 12:30, 15:00  

Tour times from April 2024: 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 15:30 

Duration: 1 hour

Tickets

Before 1 April

  • Adult: £6
  • Concessions (Student with valid ID, over 65, disabled visitors, LTM Friends): £4
  • Child: Free
  • Disabled visitor’s carer/companion: Free 

From 1 April onwards

  • Standard: £12
  • Concessions (Student with valid ID, over 65, disabled visitors, LTM Friends): £9
  • Child: £6
  • Disabled visitor’s carer/companion: Free

Tour information

Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is not permitted anywhere in the Depot. 

The Depot is a working store and restoration center where we allow special access for visitors during guided tours. Some areas cannot be accessed by visitors, and these are clearly marked with signage or barriers. Do not go into these areas. 

This tour includes standing / walking for the duration of the tour.  

Please do not touch the objects on display unless you’re specifically invited to do so as part of the tour. 

  • On your arrival

    On arrival, please make your way to the reception where a member of staff will meet you. Please arrive 15 minutes early.  

    Please take care on the approach road and stay within the green marked pedestrian areas. 

  • Who are these Family Depot Tours for?

    Family depot tours are for family groups with children aged 5-11 years old.  

    Tickets are not available for adults visiting without children.  

  • If I have a younger child as well, can I bring them?

    We understand that some families have children younger than 5 as well, and we don’t want to be prohibitive. However, please be aware that the tours are an hour long, involve walking and listening, and are not designed for children under 5. 

  • Accessibility

    All tours involve standing for the duration of the tour. Most tours are fully accessible to wheelchair users.  Find out more about accessibility at the Depot. 

    The Depot is a working building, and whilst we take every care to eliminate all possible trip hazards, there are rail tracks and grooves set in the floor which may not be suitable for those with a visual impairment or general mobility concerns. 

    Accessible toilet facilities are located next to the main reception, and service animals are permitted inside the Depot building. 

    Visitors who require assistance due to disabilities are able to book a carer/companion ticket free of charge. 

  • Is photography allowed?

    Photography is allowed for private purposes in the main shed only, but tripods are not allowed. 

  • Is there somewhere I can leave my things?

    Backpacks, rucksacks and other large bags can be stored in our free lockers, as they cannot be taken into the Depot. Handbags, camera bags, tote bags etc. are allowed into the Depot, or can be stored in the free lockers. Please note that lockers require a refundable pound coin or token. 

  • Are toilet facilities available?

    Yes, toilet and baby changing facilities are available. Accessible toilet facilities are located next to the main reception. 

  • Is food and drink allowed?

    Food and drink is not permitted inside the Depot, except for still bottled water. This is to protect the collection objects from damage caused by food residue or pests. If you need to eat at regular intervals for medical reasons, please make your tour guide aware of this so they can assist you. 

  • Is there a café on site?

    There is no café on site, but a number of refreshment facilities are available close to Acton Town station.
