The library at Albany House

The Library is for anyone interested in finding out more about London's public transport - past, present and future – and the wider development of transport, transport design and London’s social history. 

Please note, the Library will be closed over the Christmas period from Monday 24 December to Thursday 3 January inclusive. We will reopen on Friday 4 January 2019.

There is no charge for admission, but the Library can only accommodate two visitors at a time, so appointments are essential.

Please contact us as far in advance as possible, particularly if you are going to be travelling some distance, and supply at least three dates when you can visit.

We are happy to discuss your research before you book a visit and let you know whether we hold relevant material.

Library collections at Acton

Our reserve collections and special collections. are stored in the Museum’s collection store at Acton.

We can advise whether an appointment to consult those collections would be appropriate for your research.

Access

The Library at Albany House and the study area at Acton are both on the first floor and have step-free access. Please let us know when booking your appointment if you have any access requirements so we can make suitable arrangements for your visit.

Information for visitors

  • Visitors must bring photo identification (driving licence, passport, travel pass, student card, employee ID) and proof of address (e.g. recent utility bill, bank statement)
  • Use pencils for taking notes
  • Laptops may be used
  • Digital cameras may be used to take copies with the permission of the librarian

Copyright

The purpose of your research dictates what you can copy. It is the visitor’s responsibility to be informed about whether their research and copying falls within the exceptions to copyright.

At the Museum Library, copying for research or private study for non-commercial purposes only is allowed, with the permission of the librarian.

You will be asked to complete a copyright declaration form for any copies you make.
