Description | In 1906, the Kingsway Tram Subway was opened, allowing trams to travel directly from Bloomsbury to Westminster. This double-sided destination board would have been displayed on the side of the tram to indicate the route. The tram services were operated by London County Council Tramways (L.C.C.T.). The subway also connected the trams systems north and south of the river via tram tracks laid on Westminster Bridge. The subway was built as part of the Kingsway Scheme, a major road development that focused on clearing slum housing and realigning two new streets, Aldwych and Kingsway. |
