Description
Leather bound blotter containing two pages of signatures, one on either cover totalling 124 autographs . Commissioned from Edward Johnston to commemorate the retirement of Frank Pick. There are 124 autograph signatures in six columns - 54 on the inside front cover and 70 on the inside back cover. [Lord] Ashfield is the first signature at the top of the first column. Other notable signatures include Walter Gott (joined UERL Publicity Dept in 1906, the same year as Pick, and retired 1946); W P N [Bill] Edwards (Ashfield's personal assistant and co-author of Carr-Edwards report on standardising LPTB signage, 1938); C[ecil] G[rantham] Page (LPTB Secretary and Chief Legal Advisor); AH Grainger (LPTB Solicitor); J H Harley Mason (New Works Engineer); A[lexander] B B Valentine (Commercial Officer, later Chair LTE/LTB 1959-65, married Pick's former secretary); Christian Barman (LPTB Publicity Officer from 1935, in succession to Henry T Carr, commissioned this blotter); H T Hutchings (LPTB General Superintendent Traffic.) Note - the signature G D Meynell on the inside back cover is NOT Gerard Meynell (the Westminster Press publisher who first introduced Pick and Johnston in 1913) - the G D Meynell who signed the blotter was the Assistant Constructional Engineer, Dept of the Chief Electrical Engineer (retired 1944). Gerald Meynell the publisher was G T Meynell. There appears to be no signature from H[enry] T Carr, the Assistant Publicity Officer in 1938 who co-authored the Carr-Edwards report. He was succeeded by Christian Barman, which implies that only currently-serving LPTB officers were asked to sign the blotter.
