Talking Type Livestream

We look at type everyday but what is it actually trying to tell us? How do designers decide what a font is going to look like?

Use this 30 min virtual webinar with your students to explore TfL’s Johnston typeface and learn from graphic designer Chris Ratcliffe about his design process and all things type. This virtual webinar will lead you and your students through a creative making activity, and kick-start learning how to design your own typeface or carry on after the session.

Use our downloadable resource to create your own poem inspired by the Poems on the Underground, topped with a title in your own bespoke font!

This session is a pre-recorded virtual webinar teachers can use to deliver a creative Art and Design session in the classroom.

Please ensure you read and use our Talking Type Teachers resource to best prepare for and use this virtual webinar with your class.

Johnston facts

  • The typeface has been in use for more than 100 years making it the longest lasting example of corporate branding
  • The dot used for letters like i and j as well as full stops and commas are called tittles and in Johnston typeface they are little squares turned on to a corner to make them into little diamonds
