What is payroll giving?

Payroll giving is a tax-efficient way for your staff to make a regular donation to London Transport Museum or to any other UK registered charity through your payroll process.

It’s simple to set up and run and there are few costs - and it’s an excellent way to support your employees’ charitable giving and London Transport Museum’s heritage and education work.

Setting up your scheme

  • Register with a payroll giving agency (PGA) – the agency will send your employees’ donations to their nominated charities.  Click here for a list of PGAs approved by the HMRC https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/payroll-giving-approved-agencies
  • Promote your payroll giving scheme to staff through your internal communications or by arranging a visit from a Professional Fundraising Organisation (PFO)
  • Deduct employees’ donations from their salary each time you run your payroll (the donation will be taken from your employees’ pay before tax but after National Insurance), sending the employees’ names and donation amounts to your selected payroll giving agency
  • London Transport Museum and any other nominated charities then receive your employees’ donations from your selected payroll giving agency

Benefits of payroll giving to your employees

Payroll giving is easy and convenient, coming straight from your employee’s salary. Your employees can choose to support any UK registered charity, including London Transport Museum (Registered Charity No 1123122).

There’s no limit on the size of donations, or how many charities they can support, and the donations can be stopped or changed at any time, simply by informing your payroll team.

The donation is deducted from your employee’s pay before tax which means it costs less to give more. Use our calculator below to see how much it will cost your employee:

Benefits of payroll giving for your business

Payroll giving is an excellent way of demonstrating your business’ commitment to corporate social responsibility. It can boost staff morale and motivation, supporting retention and recruitment.

Payroll giving enhances your business’ charitable giving, with little effort or cost to you and enables you to monitor the level of charitable giving that your business has helped achieve.

It also offers the opportunity to gain recognition from your industry peers by attaining a Quality Mark Award, a Government award given to organisations who implement Payroll giving.

  • Payroll giving Quality Mark

One way to work towards a target for payroll giving within your company is to aim for a Government supported payroll giving Quality Mark, a benchmarking system that recognises when an employer offers the scheme and signifies those businesses operating exceptional schemes

Every employer that offers a payroll giving scheme to their employees is eligible to receive a Quality Mark. Employers that achieve set participation rates are eligible to apply for a Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum or Diamond Quality Mark

Each year companies can apply to their contracted payroll giving agency for their applicable Quality Mark.
