Description | A-stock trains were built in the early 1960s by Cravens of Sheffield in two batches, designated as A60 and A62. This example, Car 5034, is from the first batch. It entered service in 1961 and was part of the last train in service in 2012. A-stock trains were used on Metropolitan Line services to Amersham, Chesham, Watford and Uxbridge; they also operated on the East London Line, until LUL services were withdrawn in 2007. The A-stock was the oldest type of train in passenger service on London Underground when it was withdrawn, and the last LU train to have separate controls for acceleration and for braking. It also had unusual features such as luggage racks with umbrella hooks, and transverse seating, and was the last train without automated announcements. |
