Description | Brake vans were coupled to the rear of goods trains that for many years were unbraked. Brake vans were originally fitted with handbrakes to enable the train's guard to help control the speed. This van is fitted with a hand brake and air brakes. Goods services ceased on the Metropolitan line in 1937, so van Number B558 was mostly used on engineers' trains. It was used for brake block testing in the 1970s at Neasden depot before it was retired. |
