Description | This moquette sample has a repeating pattern in black and dark brown with light blue highlights on a light brown background. The pattern was introduced on to the seats of London County Council- operated trams during the 1930s. Originally, trams had wooden seating upstairs and leather upholstery downstairs. This difference in standard reflected the division of class and was copied from the approach taken on trains, known as 'Pullmanisation'. Wooden seating was more practical to clean after workmen with dirty clothes had travelled on the trams. |
