Description
Underground railway staff cap badge, sometimes referred to as 'motorman's badge'. Roundel style inscribed "LONDON TRANSPORT" across bar with pecking above and below, infilled orange ochre enamel and chrome-plated. Lugs and pin on reverse. These badges were issued to railway staff from 1934 and were in use until about 1977. They were worn by train drivers and automatic train operators, and staff such as shunters, train checkers and depot gatekeepers. Prior to 1939 they were also issued to guards and some grades of station staff. Early badges were nickel silver, and later issues, such as this one, were chrome-plated (Lawrence, 1989, p.52 / Fig.88).
