Description | Walthamstow was one of ten local London councils to operate their own tramway services. This is the Walthamstow Corporation Tramways staff cap badge. Made of bronze, it features the borough's coat of arms: a stag and dog either side of a shield mounted with a helmet, crown and dove of peace. It has the inscription 'Walthamstow Corporation' and the borough's motto, 'Fellowship in Life'. Set up in 1905, Walthamstow Corporation started with just three routes, but later ran joint services with its neighbouring Leyton and West Ham councils. The trams were painted in the Walthamstow livery of crimson and yellow with 'Walthamstow District Council' inscribed on the side. The Walthamstow depot was in Chingford Road and later became a trolleybus garage and then a bus garage. It closed in 1991. |
