Description | This workman's ticket was issued by the Metropolitan Railway in 1901. It is the return half of a third-class ticket from Westminster to Baker Street. The large 'O' overprinted in red signifies that this was valid on the Outer Rail of the Circle Service, which ran clockwise. The Metropolitan Railway introduced workmen's fares in May 1864. When the line was extended to Moorgate in December 1865, these became a statutory requirement. For a return fare of 3d (3 pence), workmen were permitted to take one of two early morning trains, and could return by any train that day. |
