Description | The gas producer unit, introduced nationally by the Home Office, was an experiment to conserve fuel during the Second World War. One hundred and fifty London buses were converted to run on producer gas during the war. The gas was made by injecting water into burning coal in a trailer unit towed behind the bus. Unfortunately, the idea was effective only when travelling on the level. |
