Main details

Main details for this item.
Reference number
1986/44
Description
During the Second World War, London Transport staff established a fund to help pay for the production of Spitfire planes. This plaque was issued by the Ministry of Aircraft Production to thank employees of the London Passenger Transport Board for the money they contributed. It includes the phrase 'They shall mount up with wings as eagles'. In 1942, a cheque for £5,000, the cost of one Spitfire, was handed to the Minister of Aircraft Production. A second followed nine months later. Both aircraft carried the familiar London Transport roundel symbol.
