Description | With the introduction of the B-type motorbus in 1910, the days of the horse bus were numbered. This commemorative plaque shows the metal bit from the horse harness used by the last horse bus worked by the London General Omnibus Company (L.G.O.C.) on 25 October 1911. The horse bus travelled from London Bridge station along Moorgate Street to the Moorgate Tramway Terminus. The L.G.O.C. was London's largest horse bus operator, and at its peak owned more than 17,000 horses. With the withdrawal of the horse bus, new homes needed to be found for the horses. Some found alternative work pulling trade carts, or were sold to farmers for heavy labour, but sadly many others had to be destroyed. |
