Description | A poster outlining key safety codes for shelterers in underground stations during air raids. This poster was issued by London Transport in 1940. Copies would have appeared in the deep-level Underground stations, where an estimated 63 million people sheltered during the Second World War.The government originally banned the use of the Underground for sheltering. However, it soon recognised the need to authorise and regulate a system. London Transport published clearly defined rules and regulations in the form of posters, leaflets and rulebooks. This poster outlines five key safety codes for shelterers. |
