Description
London Transport issued this poster in 1966. It promotes travel to the City's contemporary art galleries. The design, by the prolific artist Hans Unger, takes the form of a diagram charting avant-garde art movements. The colours and font make it instantly recognisable as a section of the Tube map. However, the layout does not actually appear anywhere in this exact form.

ART TODAY The Tate, re-hung with taste and logic, offers the academically approved, the Whitechapel the young and middle-generation painters. The Greater London Council sets contemporary British sculpture against the simpler pleasures of Battersea Park. Complete your survey with the commercial galleries of deepest Mayfair and Chelsea, and the avant-garde extremes. For all these new frontiers, the explorer's kit is simple - an open mind, Underground and bus maps, and a sense of humour. For The Tate Gallery: Underground or bus to Westminster, then bus 77b. For The Whitechapel Art Gallery; Underground to Aldgate East. For Battersea Park; Underground to Sloane Square, then bus 137.
