Description | This poster was commissioned by the Underground group in 1923. It was designed by Aldo Cosomati to promote travel to Hampton Court by tram. The figure of Henry VIII, who seized Hampton Court from Cardinal Wolsey in 1529, dominates the composition. In the background the Tudor facade of the palace appears in silhouette. Cosomati was born in Italy. He lived in Zurich for five years where he studied drawing, printing, bookbinding and furniture design. He settled in London at the end of the First World War and designed a number of posters and adverts for London Transport through the 1920s. The journey to Hampton Court would have taken some time by tram, unless it began in West London. The quickest route from central London would have been by Southern Railway from Waterloo, although it was not in the Underground group's best interest to promote that. |
