Description | People try to board a bus at Hyde Park Corner going towards Putney High Street during the National Railway Strike of 1919. The rail unions claimed that the government was using a wartime pay agreement to bring about wage cuts for some types of worker. The strike was successful. It forced the government to abandon attempts to cut wages and demonstrated the power of the Railway Trade Unions. Nevertheless, it was a difficult time for the public, since there were few private cars at the time and most relied entirely on public transport. |
