Description | Brixton Underground station was opened in 1971 as part of the Victoria Line Extension project. There were plans to develop the station as a major interchange, linking it with the nearby mainline station. This has not been done, although the station was extensively refitted. The station opens onto Brixton Road, which is the main shopping street in Brixton. The street here is crowded with pedestrians and shoppers. |
