Description | A crowd of people queue along Kensington High Street, waiting to get into the January sales. The allied businesses of John Barker & Company Limited, Derry & Toms Limited and Pontings Limited stretched for half a mile down the High Street. The first two had just been redeveloped, in 1920, into flagship Art Deco shopping stores. On the roof of the Derry and Toms building, Kensington Roof Gardens were created. In this period the High Street was one of the finest in London, rivalling Oxford Street in splendour and the quality of its shops. |
