Description | Big Ben strikes one on a wintry day above the reconstruction work for the new Westminster Underground station on the Jubilee, District and Circle lines. The Houses of Parliament stand on the south side of Bridge Street and Westminster Bridge Road. This subsurface station, designed by Michael Hopkins and Partners, was developed together with a new Parliament building to house M.P.s and offices. The proximity of this site to the Houses of Parliament caused extra concerns for the architects. In order to protect the foundations of the Clock Tower ('Big Ben'), the two Jubilee line tunnels were stacked on top of one another. |
