Description | 'Land girls' Mary Howe and Gwen Seale are cutting 'Winningstadt' cabbages at the London Transport farm at Bushey, Oak Field. Howe was formerly an art student and Seale a General Post Office employee. These vegetables were probably destined for London Transport canteens around the capital. The Second World War prompted unprecedented social and geographical mingling. Men and women were posted around the country, often living away from home, to help the war effort. |
