Description
Hannah Dadds was the first woman train operator on the Underground. She trained and qualified in 1978. This was important in the move towards equal opportunities for women in the workplace. In the early 1970s some people still believed that some jobs were not suitable for women. Hannah found most colleagues supportive, although she experienced some sexist remarks. When people heard that a woman had qualified as a driver, Dadds became famous over night. London Underground held a press conference and she posed for many photos like this one. This photo was taken in 1978 and shows Dadds in her uniform climbing into the cab of a District line R-stock train.
