Description | View of the interior of a 1938 Tube stock car. The original Art Deco-inspired lampshades seem to have been removed by the time this picture was taken. The moquette seating fabric visible in this photo is called ‘Roundel’ and was designed by Joy Jarvis in 1947. The 1938 Tube stock was to be the standard London Tube train for the next 50 years and came to be seen as a design classic. One of the most important innovations was the under-floor storage of equipment that had formerly been stored at the ends of the carriages. This made more room for passengers. |
