Description | Air travel and the airport at Heathrow has greatly benefited London's economy. HM Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Piccadilly line extension linking the airport to central London on 16 December 1977, when this picture was taken. The Queen accompanied by Mr J Graeme Bruce, Chief Operating Manager (Railways), rode in the cab of a 1973-stock train during the three-minute journey from Hatton Cross. The driver of the royal train was motorman Charles Belcher, the train guard Leslie Rowland. The train is here pictured approaching the ceremonial ribbon as it pulls in to the station. |
