PICCADILLY, LOOKING EAST FROM DEVONSHIRE HOUSE, 1923; SHOWING THE RITZ HOTEL (opened 1908) on site of the Walsingham House and the Bath Hotels, and the Berkeley Hotel (formerly the St. James's). When building the Ritz Piccadilly was widened at this point by the side-walk being merged in the carriage-way, a new side-walk being provided beneath the colonnade of the Ritz, the frontage of which preserves the alignment of the former buildings. Devonshire House (recently sold by the Duke) is open for public inspection of chambers and furniture, with Listening-In entertainments, all on behalf of charity. Photograph (taken March 7, 1923) by Topical Press. Underground copyright.
