Description
The Ring, Hyde Park, near the Achilles Statue; a view looking north-east (which White states would be towards Park Lane, though it is actually more likely to be towards Bayswater Road or Cumberland Gate). This is a street scene showing the junction of the two carriage roads, which White notes was taken on the day of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The roads are a mass of horse drawn vehicles and passengers in Victorian best dress, with some of the ladies holding white parasols. A crowd has gathered on the opposite side of the road, and is watching the procession. There is a Diamond Jubilee recollection from White on the reverse of the print.

    THE SEASON IN TOWN, 1885.

HYDE PARK: THE RING, NEAR THE ACHILLES STATUE, LOOKING NORTH-EAST TOWARDS PARK LANE.

Photograph (supplied February, 1923) by Frith & Co., Ltd.

    A DIAMOND JUBILEE RECOLLECTION.

The corner of Hyde Park shown in the photograph overleaf presented on the afternoon of the Diamond Jubilee a scene of colour and animation such as it had never presented before, or has presented since. The junction of the two carriage-roads was one mass of carriages, drawn by splendid prancing horses (Cleveland bays and greys), and with the ladies who occupied them dressed in the height of Late Victorian fashion and holding white sunshades. It was a glorious sunny day, and the spectacle of the congregation of carriages, backed by the green trees of the park is one that will never fade from the memory of those who witnessed it.
