TUFTON ST., LOOKING NORTH FROM DEAN TRENCH ST. (the west byway of Smith Square), A VIEW AFTER PARTIAL CLEARANCE, CIRCA 1912. The hovels on the left were typical of the "houses" of this street and its vicinity. Photograph (Ref. No. 3979C) supplied by the L.C.C., Feb., 1923.

TUFTON ST. TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO.

"Tufton St.., a good large and open place, having on the east side a row of well built houses, but the west side, as yet, is unbuilt. In this street is Bennett's Yard, very ordinary." - STRYPE (1720).

The photograph overleaf shows part of the east side of Tufton St. as it was about 1912. Maybe the "property" on the left formed part of the "row of well-built houses" referred to by Strype?
