    Annotation
THE MARBLE ARCH AND THE PARK LANE CORNER OF OXFORD ST, FROM THE EDGWARE ROAD 1923; showing the Marble Arch in its original position but insulated through the setting-back of the Park railings, an improvement carried out in 1908-9; and the block of flats (with shops and a cinema on the Oxford St front) erected on the corner of Park Lane in 1920. As a traffic improvement, the Marble Arch widening may be compared with the Hyde Park Corner widening of the 'Eighties (see PICCADILLY file). It would have been better to have followed the plan of the latter widening, however, and to have set back the Arch to form a proper entrance to the Park, as was done with Burton's Arch at Hyde Park Corner. The island site could then have been utilised for memorial purposes - an archway in the middle of an open space is an absurdity.
