    Annotation
PICCADILLY: THE SOUTH SIDE, BY THE EGYPTIAN HALL, 1905.

This photograph shows the Egyptian Hall and the adjoining property on each side just prior to the demolition of this section of the south side of Piccadilly for rebuilding and widening purposes. The houses on each side of the Hall were typical of the buildings then existing between St. James's St. and Duke St.

The Egyptian Hall was built in 1812 by P. F. Robinson for the exhibition of the Bullock Natural History Collection. The Piccadilly elevation was copied from the Temple of Tentyris in Egypt, and the figures of Isis and Osiris over the doorway were executed by S. Gahagan (the designer of the monument of the Duke of Kent in Portland Place). Among the attractions of the Hall after the sale of the Bullock Collection in 1819 were Belzoni's models of the Pyramids and other Egyptian monuments; the Siamese Twins, General Tom Thumb, and Artemas Ward. In 1850 Lord Dudley deposited his collection of pictures here for public inspection; they were removed in the 'eighties to the adjacent Dudley Gallery. In the later years of its existence the Hall was famous as the venue of Maskelyne & Cook's entertainments.
