Description
A District 1920 F-stock train emerging from the Thames Tunnel at Wapping station on a northbound East London line service. The Thames Tunnel is the world's oldest public tunnel under water, having been built between 1825 and 1843, with many setbacks, and opened as a pedestrian subway in the latter year. It was taken over by the East London Railway in 1865, and reopened as a railway tunnel in 1869. The F-stock was built for the District Railway in 1920; in 1950, after rehabilitation, the 99 cars were transferred to the Metropolitan Railway. About 24, in four-car formations, provide the whole service on the East London line.
