THE SCREEN. This was erected by Decimus Burton in 1828; the frieze of the central entablature is copied from the frieze of the Parthenon.
APSLEY HOUSE. This was originally a red brick mansion, designed by the Adam brothers for Lord Chancellor Apsley. It was faced with stone and the portico added in 1828-29, by Wyatville (? Samuel Wyatt and his brother), when the mansion was occupied by the Duke of Wellington, who had acquired it from his brother, the Marquess Wellesley.
GROSVENOR PLACE. The western edge of the refuge marks the original alignment of the Green Park side of Grosvenor Place, which was set back when the Wellington Arch was moved to its present site in the 'eighties.
THE HORSE OMNIBUSES. The "Putney White," the "Hammersmith Red," and the "Favorite" were services already existing when the L.G.O.C. began operating in the 'fifties. The King's Cross and Victoria service went via Leicester Square and Long Acre. Note the flower-seller on the kerb - she shifted when the motor-buses came along.
