Description | Air raid damage at Bank station, January 1941. This view shows civilians and soldiers at work amid the rubble of a huge crater caused by a bomb which exploded in an escalator machinery room at the station, killing 56 people. Two cranes can be seen on the lip of the crater. Threadneedle Street, with the Bank of England, is on the left, and Lombard Street on the right. The large building, background centre, is the Royal Exchange. |
