Description | Side view of District 1905-electric locomotives nos 2A and 8A, coupled in multiple. 10 of these locomotives were built for hauling (in pairs) LNWR 'Outer Circle' trains (9 four-wheelers) from Earl's Court to Mansion House. The builders were the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co Ltd of Birmingham; the American made electrical equipment included four 200 hp motors. They had a length of 29 ft and weighed 29 tons. When LNWR trains to Mansion House ceased on 31 December 1908, they were put onto the Inner Circle - one locomotive heading four cars. From 1 June 1910, they operated Ealing-Southend services in pairs, and continued to do so until the service was withdrawn in 1939. |
