On panel: Q1 TYPE OMNIBUS LONDON GENERAL OMNIBUS CO. Built by the Company, the Q1 went into service in September 1932. The Q1 type bus made transport history in this country in being the first vehicle which broke away from the traditional engine position at the front. The petrol engine was mounted on the off-side and the whole length of the bus was available for passengers with the result that 37 seats were provided compared with 30/32 on orthodox designs.
Subsequently two versions of the Q type double-decker were built in 1934 with front entrance for the Central Area and centre entrance for the Country Area. Each had 56 seats and petrol engines. In 1935 appeared the Country Area single-decker of the 4Q4 type with oil engine, following which several other versions appeared. The series of 238 Q type was completed by an experimental double-decker six-wheeler coach which, however, was not developed beyond the protoype.
