On the sign it reads "On 10 January 1863, the world's first underground railway, the Metropolitan, was opened and steam trains run the four miles between Paddington (Bishop's Road) and Farringdon Street.

In the room are displayed some visual records of the great occasion together with some photographs and printed 'ephemera' connected with the centenary celebrations of 1963.

Today London Transport's electric underground covers 244 miles of track and carries 675,000,000 passengers a year."
