Description
District Railway construction. This view shows site clearance immediately to the east of Blackfriars Bridge. Work has largely stopped whilst the workmen look at the photographer. The first stages of a cut-and-cover trench can be seen in the foreground. A horse and cart stand foreground right; two steam cranes, one with a bucket suspended from its jib, are visible, midground centre/right. The dome of St Paul's cathedral is prominent above the buildings in the background.

    Annotation
    On reverse of print: Site clearance in the neighbourhood of Queen Victoria Street immediately to the east of New Bridge Street, Blackfriars. Queen Victoria Street was built simultaneously with the construction of the District Railway. The thoroughfare was opened in sections between October 1869 and November 1871. The railway was opened from Blackfriars to Mansion House on July 3rd 1871.
