    Henry William Townshend commenced employment with the Metropolitan and Great Central Joint Committee in 1914 (probably as a parcels boy) at Aldersgate (now Barbican) Station. During the First World War he served in the Rifle Brigade and was wounded. On demobilisation he resumed service with the M & CG as a booking clerk and later senior booking clerk. Early in the 1930s he was promoted to relief booking clerk. By the early 1940s he was a relief Station Master eventually assuming the position of Stationmaster at Hammersmith (Metropolitan) station where he remained until retirement in 1959.
