    Born in Epsom, Surrey, Mick Rooney studied at Sutton School of Art from 1959 to 1962 and at Wimbledon School of Art from 1962 to 1964. He then went to the Royal College of Art for three years. It was during this time at the RCA that he won the Austin Abbey Major scholarship to study at the British School in Rome from 1967-1968.

    In 1983 he was artist-in-residence at the Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne. Popular themes for his paintings include social gatherings, food and humour.

    He has regularly exhibited at many galleries, and had his first solo exhibition at the Fulham Gallery in London in 1965. His work can now be seen at the Towner Art Gallery and at the Rye Art Gallery in Sussex.

    In 1991 he became a Royal Academician.
