    Raymond McGrath was an Australian. He won two scholarships from Sydney University, and then studied architecture at Clare College Cambridge. He practised architecture in London and was responsible for the interior design of RIBA (of which he became a fellow), and was design consultant for the BBC working on studio interiors, equipment and furnishing, and the Aspro factory in Slough. In 1940 he moved to Ireland where he worked for the Board of Works. From 1948 to 1968 he was its principal architect and worked on Áras an Uachtaráin, Dublin Castle and various Irish Embassies abroad. He designed the Cenotaph on Leinster Lawn.
    He was Professor of Architecture at the Royal Hibernian Academy as well as its head and the architect of its new building (1973).
