    Biography
Philip Hagreen was a wood engraver, painter, ivory carver, typographer, letter-cutter and cartoonist. After WWI, he assembled artists such as Noel Rooke (a British wood engraver and artist, 1881-1953) and Orovida Pissarro (a British painter and etcher, 1893-1968) to establish the Society of Wood Engravers in 1920. In the early 1920s, Hagreen settled in Ditchling where he became a leading member of the local artist community and learned letter-cutting with Eric Gill (a British sculptor, typeface designer, stonecutter and printmaker, 1882-1940). For 15 years from 1934, he contributed to amusing cartoons for The Cross and The Plough, the magazine of the Catholic Land Federation. His work is now represented in the collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum and British Museum.
