    Born in Birmingham, Bernard Sleigh was apprenticed to a commercial wood engraver. He attended evening classes at Birmingham School of Art. Sleigh went on to teach wood engravingat Birmingham School of Art and was instrumental in developing artistic expression using this medium as more than a means of reproduction. He also designed murals and works in stained glass together with painting in oil and watercolours. He worked for The Quest magazine and Essex House Press. He exhibited at the RA and RBSA of which he was a member.

    Examples of his work are held by Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery.
