Attribute Value Biography George Stampa was born in Constantinople and was the second son of the architect G D Stampa - who designed Manchester Free Trade Hall and the Sultan's Palace in Constantinople amongst other buildings.
He was educated at Appleby Grammar School, Bedford Modern School, Heatherley's School of Art and RA Schools. His first drawing for Punch appeared in 1894 and in 1900 he became a full-time illustrator and cartoonist. He worked mainly for Punch but also contributed to many other magazines.
Stampa is best remembered for his drawings of London street characters.
