Biography
Attribute Value Biography A painter and printmaker and wood engraver, John Buckland Wright was born in New Zealand. His family moved to England in 1905. He served in World War One in an ambulance unit attached to the French Army at Verdun and elsewhere, being awarded the Croix de Guerre. After the war he studied History and Architecture at Oxford.
He visited Paris and Italy but settled for a time in Brussels where he taught himself engraving. From 1929 to 1939 he lived in Paris, exhibiting his work there and in London.
During World War Two he returned to London working as a censor with Reuters. Amongst other work he produced two engravings of shelterers in the London Tube during World War Two exhibited at the Leicester Galleries towards the end of 1940. From 1948 he taught at a number of art schools.Role Artist,
