    Cecil Bacon was born in Battle, Sussex, and studied at Hastings School of Art under Philip Cole from 1923 to 1925 before joining a commercial advertising agency in London in 1926.

    In 1929 he began working freelance, some of his earliest work being for London Transport. From 1935 he began a long association with the 'Radio Times' designing some highly regarded covers.

    During World War Two he designed memorable posters for the Ministry of Information. Later he did notable work for British Railways and the Post Office Savings Bank. He also designed many book jackets. He was noted for the technique of pen and ink drawing on scraperboard.

    In 1981 he contributed to 'Fifty Years of Design' at the Design Centre in London and to 'Art at the Radio Times' at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
