Attribute Value Biography Tom Purvis was born in Bristol, the son of a sailor turned marine painter. He trained at Camberwell School of Art as well as with Sickert and Degas.
After six years in advertising, he went freelance and designed his first independent poster for Dewar's whisky in 1907. Other major commissions followed, including many posters for the London & North Eastern Railway which are among his best-known works.
He served on the committee for the British Art in Industry Exhibition at the Royal Academy (1935) and was made a Royal Designer for Industry in 1936. (Green 1990)Education Camberwell School of Art,Employment Designed posters for the Underground Group and London Transport, 1932-1934Role Artist,
